A guide written on the road, not from a desk.
Drive View Hotels began with a simple frustration: the best places to stay in Australia were the hardest to find. Aggregators buried them, star ratings flattened them, and sponsored lists misled. So we started keeping our own notebook — and, eventually, sharing it.
We believe a great hotel is a place with a point of view — and that finding one should feel like a gift, not a gamble.
We're a small, fiercely independent team of writers, photographers and former hoteliers scattered across the country. We pay for our own rooms, keep our opinions our own, and measure success in one thing only: the trips we help make unforgettable.
This page lays out exactly how we work — our mission, our standards, and the promises we make to every traveller who takes our word for it.
To make the extraordinary easy to find.
We exist to connect curious travellers with the stays that will define their trip — the design hotel, the alpine lodge, the pod in the perfect postcode — and to do it with honesty, warmth and genuine expertise.
A more thoughtful way to travel Australia.
We want to shift attention away from anonymous chains and toward independent, characterful places that give back to their communities — proving that where you sleep can be the best part of the journey.
How a hotel earns its place
Every property clears the same four gates before it ever appears on this site.
01We stay, in person
No property is featured on brochure copy alone. We book anonymously and experience it as any guest would — check-in queue and all.
02Character over category
Stars don't move us; a point of view does. We look for design, story, location and a sense of place you can't fake.
03Consistency, not luck
A single good night isn't enough. We weigh service, upkeep and the little details that hold up across seasons.
04Values that align
We favour stays that treat their staff, their community and their environment with respect — and quietly leave out those that don't.
From tip-off to published stay.
A recommendation usually starts as a whisper — from a local writer, a chef, a past guest. We shortlist, book, visit, photograph and cross-check. Only the stays that still impress us weeks later make it into the journal, and we revisit them each season to keep the guide honest.

Travel philosophy
Slow, curious and local. We'd rather send you to one perfect stay than a dozen forgettable ones.
Australian focus
This land is our beat. We know its cities, coasts and high country because we live in them.
Quality promise
If we wouldn't send our own family there, it doesn't go in the guide. Full stop.
Responsible tourism
We champion stays that protect Country, support local makers and tread lightly on fragile places.
A decade in the field
How we got here
A notebook becomes a newsletter
Two friends start emailing hotel finds to a handful of subscribers after a road trip along the New South Wales coast.
The journal goes public
Demand outgrows the inbox. Drive View Hotels launches as an independent online guide, funded entirely by readers.
Home-ground focus
As the world stays put, we double down on Australia — mapping the country's overlooked stays region by region.
A team on every coast
Writers and photographers join us in each state, so recommendations come from people who actually live there.
The collection today
More than 180 vetted stays across four signature categories — and a promise that still fits on a napkin: only the ones we love.
Have a stay we should know about?
We read every tip. If there's a remarkable place we've missed, tell us — the best finds almost always come from travellers like you.
